Port Captain- New York

Purpose:

To supervise and carry out the cargo operation in a professional and efficient manner for our customers to make their cargo operation more productive and economical.

 

Interrelations:

Reporting to Site Responsible of New York site.

 

Main Responsibilities:

  • Attend vessel during cargo operations to coordinate and supervise loading and/or discharging, in accordance with WSS and customer requirement.

  • Constructively assist, suggest and contribute to stowage planning, vessel’s stability & voyage planning.

  • Liaise with and supervision of Stevedores

  • Supervise lashing and cargo securing operation and surveys.

  • Streamline cargo operation.

  • Liaison with Receivers, Shippers, Owners, Charterers, Master and regulatory bodies.

  • Close liaison with Master & crew, stevedores, port authorities or terminal for pre-planning of cargo operation to be carried out in a professional and efficient manner, thus saving time and to avoid complications on the day of operation.

  • Scheduled reporting to customers on vessel’s performance and port operations.

  • Comply with WSS PPE standard when working in port and onboard the vessels.

Accountabilities:

  • To ensure time efficient loading and/or discharging of cargoes in port.

  • To ensure safety of all personnel involved in vessel’s operation during port call.

  • To maintain open and clear communication with customer, stevedores, ship’s officers and internally.

  • To find and implement the most cost effective means for loading and/or discharging cargo efficiently.

  • Expediting faster turnaround of the vessel in port.

  • Patience, compromise, leadership, understanding, open and honest communication.

  • Its highly important to be able to understand the needs of the ship and the crew onboard. Many people onboard could have gone for extensive periods of time, enduring delays, bad weather, cargo problems, machine repair and much more. It is important to understanding and supportive to maintain friendly relations with the vessel.

  • Having a solid background in the Maritime Industry including vessel safety, rules & regulations, vessels needs and understanding of the operation entirety.

  • It’s essential to be flexible and adaptable to situations or issues that may arise. Planning well in advance is a must i to stay ahead of any problems. When unexpected events cause the necessity to change plans, one has to think quickly to make deliberate and effective decisions.

Qualifications:

  • Maritime background and experience from Ship Agency Operations.

  • Good communication skills and command of the in English language (oral and written).

  • Process and system understanding

  • Self-motivated and result orientated

  • Proactive and possesses ability to anticipate issue to facilitate preventive measures

  • Ability to work under pressure

  • Problem solving skills with ability to make fast and sound judgment

  • Ability to effectively plan & direct an operation without compromising on safety to personnel and vessel

  • Good motivator and team leadership skills

  • Familiar with Port & local Authorities regulations, procedures and governing tariffs.

  • Computer literate
